Home DEFINITION: Season, noun [< Latin, sationem, accusative of satio, a measured portion of duration, a time of the year, a sowing or planting] NOTE: The numbers following the definitions are references to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible and Dictionary. (See References) Also, note that the numbers are keyed to either the Hebrew Dictionary or the Greek Dictionary, depending on the language. 1. The are several Hebrew words for “season”: דמוע is transliterated as mow‘êd and is pronounced mo-ade (4150). It means a specific or exact time. It has several spellings, but they essentially have the same meaning of a specific, fixed time or “season”. For example, Numbers 9:2 reveals “Let the children of Israel also keep the Passover (pecach) at His appointed season”. (mow‘êd). The Septuagint translated the Hebrew word דמוע as the Greek word ωραν (ōran). See Strong’s Greek Dictionary. See below for the Greek Dictionary definition of ωραν. 2. The Greek language has several words for “season”: καιρος,^a transliterated kairos, and pronounced like pronounced ky-ros (2540) is a fixed or specific time or occasion or season. In regard to “seasons”, for example, Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles (Sukkot) begin and end at specific, set, or exact times of the year. Scripturally, Passover began 15 after the Spring Equinox, which occurred (and still does) every March 20/21. Today, the new phase of the moon is now included in the calculation of the time of the Passover celebration. Such a determination cannot be confirmed by Scripture but was promulgated in the 4^th century AD by Rabbi Hillel II. (q.v.) Pentecost begins exactly 50 days after Passover. Tabernacles begins exactly at the Fall Equinox, every September 22/23. ^aAccording to Goetchius and Hadley and Allen, the Greek diphthong, αι, ai, is pronounced like the ai in the English word aisle. Also, according to Goetchius and Hadley and Allen, the Greek diphthong, ει, ei, is pronounced like the ei in the English word weight. Their recommendations differ from Strong’s. See “References” for Goetchius, Hadley and Allen, and Strong. Note that Hadley and Allen are a single unit. χρονος, transliterated chronos, pronounced khrŏnŏs (5550); a space or length of time, as a measured portion of duration, for example 7 days, as opposed to one second or one minute, a specific, single time element. That is, χρονος should be distinguished from καιρος and αιον, (165) which are more nearly described as lengths of time, such as millennia or a thousand years. (TO BE CONTINUED)
